When Gurren Lagann ended last week, I was left with a craving for more mecha anime. For a reason or other, I had never watched any Gundam anime, so I thought I should finally give up my “Gundam virginity” and check out Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
The anime begins with a scene from a battlefield, where a young boy is fighting to survive against bunch of mobile suits. I really like this scene because it describes well how horrible war is. When it seems like the boy is going to be killed, a shower of beams from the sky destroys all his enemies. Looking up to the sky, the boy sees his saviour, a Gundam.
Six years later Setsuna F. Seiei, the boy from the battlefield, has grown up, become a member of Celestial Being and pilot of GN-001 Gundam Exia. Celestial Being is a organization that intents to end all the wars with force for great justice.
A lot happened in the first episode, but I left a lot out because I try to avoid spoilers when reviewing first episodes. So far, it seems really good. While Gurren Lagann was all about action, Gundam 00 focuses more on politics, war and similiar serious matters. There’s also some jargon that makes no sense to me, but I think I’ll be able to follow the story somehow.
Also there seems to be a lot of characters from different parties and organizations. I usually like shows that have only few characters because they’re easier to follow. Most of the characters looked pretty plain to me. Read: most of the characters were men so I just don’t give a damn about them. The only character who really caught my eye wasa girl with braided hair and chinese dress. I also liked Patrick Corlasawar, an AEU ace pilot, who gets lots of points for being a total sandbag and yet having the guts to say really cool stuff like “Don’t you know who I am?”.
Since I’m not watching many new animes activately right now, I might as well keep watching Gundam 00. The first episode looked promising and there probably won’t be any better mecha animes airing at the moment, so I’m really looking forward the next episode for more.
