Lucky Star – Episodes 4 & 5

I think Lucky Star is finally getting there. With “there” I mean “where” it should be. I actually had fun watching these two episodes and this was the first time I laughed at something in this anime. Lucky Star still has lots of work to do to be a great comedy but I like the way things are heading. Also I’d like to see more characters from the OP introduced in the actual show, but since there’s supposedly 24 episodes or something like that, there’s still plenty of time.

Episode 4 focuses on Konata’s and her friends’ last days of school before summer holiday. For various reasons Konata reminds me a lot of myself. For last few months, I haven’t really studied or done homework outside school which is not exactly something I should be proud of… Also I love Hiroaki Samura’s Mugen no Junin (AKA Blade of the Immortal) and so does Konata. Great minds think alike!

Fifth episode introduces a new character, Yui, a police officer who’s Konata’s cousin. She wears glasses and has short hair which is pretty much my preference. If only she was a little younger… Anyways, Konata and her friends go to a festival which is quite cliched as there’s a matsuri episode in almost every single slice-of-life and comedy anime. Well, festivals are vital part of Japanese tradition and there’s plenty event, such as Halloween or Christmas, based special episodes in western TV entertainment as well, so I guess it’s all the same actually.

Hearing Cha-la Head-Cha-la as the ED for the fifth episode got me feeling really nostalgic. Though I don’t really like Dragonball Z that much (read: I think it’s one of the most stupid and useless animes ever made) these days, it’s still the anime that got me interested in anime and manga in general. It’s been years since last time I heard that song but that song, at least Konata’s version, was better than I remembered. Now I probably should go and find the original and listen to it once again just for the nostalgia.
